I chose the topic South Dakota Takes Extreme Measures to Be the Top Anti–Abortion State from the 2012 project censored list. In South Dakota the house is currently trying to pass a law that would theoretically allow the family of the mother of an aborted fetus the right to kill the doctor who performed the abortion. This is the same state the made it illegal in 1994 for the state to provide abortion services. This backlash against Roe vs. Wade isn't just contained to one state, it's being spread around middle America by the GOP. An example of this is the new "Heartbeat Bill" spearheaded by Rick Perry in Texas that would make it illegal for women to receive an abortion once a heartbeat is detected. This can be as early as 18 hours after conception and definitely after 6 weeks which is often the period where women haven't even found out about the pregnancy yet. The reason why I am picking this topic is because it infuriates me. I firmly believe in the separation of church and state and what these politicians are doing is using their highly personal religious beliefs to control the general population. If I am looking at this even without my personal beliefs on the subject I find such displays of faith grotesque and unprofessional. It has no place in law making. From a feminist perspective it is absurd to me that a bunch of men are making the decision about what women do with their bodies as well. I am looking forward to diving in.
